It is definitely super clean with the polish. A lot of guys are taking the shine off before even drilling it but I left mine at box finish just to see how it looked. I see myself throwing this ball when the lanes get a little choppy and the fronts go and I need something a little angular off the spot. Because of its cleaner cover I realized I needed to be more forward with my hand or the ball never saw the lane in time. I think this Portal will be a great league ball for house shots or in centers that have more built in friction. If you plan on using this on any kind of volume I would definitely add a bit of surface. Perfect Gem has a slightly higher diff allowing it to get through the fronts a little easier and have more pop down lane which allows me to stay more forward with my release without having to worry about the ball bailing. This one is definitely a bit more responsive than the original Gem. I was also pleasantly surprised at how well it continued through the pins for such a strong cover. I can see myself using this on longer and heavier patterns when I need a strong cover but maybe have to cover a little more of the lane. It is paired with the RB-92 Solid coverstock to give it a bunch of added traction. \nWhen watching the initial ball videos of this ball, I was a little skeptical with my higher ball speed that I would have a lot of trouble getting this ball to slow down in the right part of the lane. I put the surface to 2000 abralon prior to drilling to allow it to slow down a little faster than was intended.\nI was really surprised on how good the ball reaction was on this Portal. Considering how high the RG value is, it really didn't have problems slowing down. It got through the front part of the lane with ease and read the midlane relatively strong for what it is. I did find however, the shots that were fast off my hand did have some trouble seeing the lane right. I did have to make sure that I did roll the ball more forward for the correct ball reaction. This also makes sense to me because this ball wasn't necessarily designed for fresh conditions. More as a first or second transition ball is where I put this one, especially with the polished box surface. I would still use balls such as the Viking Conquest or Vengeance and then transition to this ball as you need more angle. At the 2000 abralon finish, I was able to bring the Portal reaction closer to the balls I mentioned while still allowing it to be significantly cleaner. If you are a bowler with low ball speed or are in a high friction lane environment, this will be a really good to have. In its previous incarnation, there was the original Gem (solid), the Exotic Gem (pearl) and the Magic Gem (hybrid). Those balls were big asymmetricals. The covers were all solid/pearl blends of MicroTrax which had nano particles for increased “snow tire” type traction. And those originals all featured the Defiant LRG core. The new Perfect Gem has all new components from its namesake. The cover is the brand new E-R1 which stands for extreme response, but it is nano free. The goal is to still provide a high degree of traction, but without nano particles, so it should clear the fronts easier than its predecessors and provide the extreme response down lane and through the pins. The Perfect Gem features the all new Gem + A.I. core which takes the original core, but recalibrates the internal density and fuses it with our Amplified Inertia (A.I.) Technology. Typically, adding A.I. to an existing core lowers the RG a little. But since the densities have been modified as well, the RG is actually a little higher in the Perfect Gem at 2.49 in the 15#. It also has a bigger differential at 0.057 with a PSA dif of 0.017. What all this means is the Perfect Gem should be pretty early, with a big flare potential so it will be at the top of your bag with the Ion Max, the Viking Conquest, but it will be a little cleaner and therefore be a little more responsive with a bigger back end reaction. I recently bowled the Northwest and West Elite Regionals on the 48’ pattern. I didn’t have this at the first Northwest event, but a lot of guys were throwing it. I drilled mine with the specific idea to use it on the West event. So I put the pin 5 ¾ from my PAP because I wanted it to stay online for the longer pattern since I would be playing so close to the head pin. I wanted it to rev up and read the midlane, so I put the PSA 2” from my PAP. And I used a 2” pin buffer so it would have a pretty quick hook window since it wouldn’t have a lot of time to make a smooth change of direction on the longer pattern. I liked what it gave me starting game 1. I felt like the cover wouldn’t over shoot and the core would rev up so it would read the midlane. It just was a little too strong on the back end given how close my breakpoint was to the pocket. Also, that pattern is really low scoring, so nothing was going to create a bunch of miss room, but it at least made me feel like I had a ball motion that gave me a chance. Throwing it on a house pattern, I confirmed that the Perfect Gem is similar to the big asyms like Ion Max and Viking Conquest. It is a little cleaner, and has more back end motion. Unlike all 900 Global balls I have thrown to date, the Portal resulted in a ball I didn’t expect to look so clean and sharp with this core. What’s unique is I can play almost any target on the lane with the correct ball speed, and the Portal can create an interesting shape without over hooking. The changes made to the Perfect Gem allow it to provide a ball that keeps coming on the back part of the lane where the original would sometimes roll out. Both solid Gems hook a lot, but I feel I will be able to use the newest on more occasions one if there is enough oil. This ball has great colors and when polished looks great. Polish also gives the ball more length and pop on the back of the lane. The Storm family has some very good high hook potential dull balls out right now. I would choose this one for a big, controlled hook with a good move at the break point. The Viking Conquest for more back-end motion and the alpha for early and forward roll. All my Equinox balls seem to carry very well for me. This ball will be great on our house shot this fall. Based on my testing I could probably use it for all three games with minor adjustments. I left the box finish on this ball and don’t see a need to alter it. I do have a few buddies who have hit the Equinox Hybrid with a 3000 pad and love the result. On the fresh I don’t think there is a better starting option right now on the market from SPI. This is the winner by a mile. On the burn this ball is probably too strong. We also tested this ball on a heavier sport shot oil pattern. Taking off the power edge and taking the cover to 2k had this ball looking like a sport shot killer. I think you will see this ball a lot at your local centers in league play and tournament play. It is definitely super clean with the polish. A lot of guys are taking the shine off before even drilling it but I left mine at box finish just to see how it looked. Unfortunately my game never really got along with the original because of how early it was and because of my low rotation it never had enough energy once it got to the pins. Perfect Gem has a slightly higher diff allowing it to get through the fronts a little easier and have more pop down lane which allows me to stay more forward with my release without having to worry about the ball bailing. This one is definitely a bit more responsive than the original Gem. I was also pleasantly surprised at how well it continued through the pins for such a strong cover. I can see myself using this on longer and heavier patterns when I need a strong cover but maybe have to cover a little more of the lane. It utilizes the new Conduit-AI Core which is a very high RG, high differential and high intermediate differential which is a combination that is not common within bowling balls. It is paired with the RB-92 Solid coverstock to give it a bunch of added traction. \nWhen watching the initial ball videos of this ball, I was a little skeptical with my higher ball speed that I would have a lot of trouble getting this ball to slow down in the right part of the lane. I put the surface to 2000 abralon prior to drilling to allow it to slow down a little faster than was intended.\nI was really surprised on how good the ball reaction was on this Portal. Considering how high the RG value is, it really didn't have problems slowing down. It got through the front part of the lane with ease and read the midlane relatively strong for what it is. I did find however, the shots that were fast off my hand did have some trouble seeing the lane right. I did have to make sure that I did roll the ball more forward for the correct ball reaction. This also makes sense to me because this ball wasn't necessarily designed for fresh conditions. More as a first or second transition ball is where I put this one, especially with the polished box surface. I would still use balls such as the Viking Conquest or Vengeance and then transition to this ball as you need more angle. At the 2000 abralon finish, I was able to bring the Portal reaction closer to the balls I mentioned while still allowing it to be significantly cleaner. If you are a bowler with low ball speed or are in a high friction lane environment, this will be a really good to have. In its previous incarnation, there was the original Gem (solid), the Exotic Gem (pearl) and the Magic Gem (hybrid). Those balls were big asymmetricals. The covers were all solid/pearl blends of MicroTrax which had nano particles for increased “snow tire” type traction. And those originals all featured the Defiant LRG core. The new Perfect Gem has all new components from its namesake. The cover is the brand new E-R1 which stands for extreme response, but it is nano free. The goal is to still provide a high degree of traction, but without nano particles, so it should clear the fronts easier than its predecessors and provide the extreme response down lane and through the pins. The Perfect Gem features the all new Gem + A.I. core which takes the original core, but recalibrates the internal density and fuses it with our Amplified Inertia (A.I.) Technology. Typically, adding A.I. to an existing core lowers the RG a little. But since the densities have been modified as well, the RG is actually a little higher in the Perfect Gem at 2.49 in the 15#. It also has a bigger differential at 0.057 with a PSA dif of 0.017. What all this means is the Perfect Gem should be pretty early, with a big flare potential so it will be at the top of your bag with the Ion Max, the Viking Conquest, but it will be a little cleaner and therefore be a little more responsive with a bigger back end reaction. I recently bowled the Northwest and West Elite Regionals on the 48’ pattern. I didn’t have this at the first Northwest event, but a lot of guys were throwing it. I drilled mine with the specific idea to use it on the West event. So I put the pin 5 ¾ from my PAP because I wanted it to stay online for the longer pattern since I would be playing so close to the head pin. I wanted it to rev up and read the midlane, so I put the PSA 2” from my PAP. And I used a 2” pin buffer so it would have a pretty quick hook window since it wouldn’t have a lot of time to make a smooth change of direction on the longer pattern. I liked what it gave me starting game 1. I felt like the cover wouldn’t over shoot and the core would rev up so it would read the midlane. It just was a little too strong on the back end given how close my breakpoint was to the pocket. Also, that pattern is really low scoring, so nothing was going to create a bunch of miss room, but it at least made me feel like I had a ball motion that gave me a chance. Throwing it on a house pattern, I confirmed that the Perfect Gem is similar to the big asyms like Ion Max and Viking Conquest. It is a little cleaner, and has more back end motion. Polish also gives the ball more length and pop on the back of the lane. The Storm family has some very good high hook potential dull balls out right now. When Alpha Crux gets to be too early or lazy, Equinox Hybrid is the perfect step down that stores a little more energy but remains really predictable. I find this ball closer to the original than the solid, which I see as a very strong ball. The Equinox Hybrid reads the Midlane earlier than the original and has slightly smoother back-end motion. The Hybrid does cover a few more boards than the original for me but is much less than the solid. This ball produces a nice predictable move at the breakpoint. All my Equinox balls seem to carry very well for me. This ball will be great on our house shot this fall. Based on my testing I could probably use it for all three games with minor adjustments. I left the box finish on this ball and don’t see a need to alter it. I do have a few buddies who have hit the Equinox Hybrid with a 3000 pad and love the result. Great thing about the new bowling balls coming out is they can be easily modified with pads or polish. This ball has already been moving well at our shop, and the feedback has been very good. This ball was well received at our recent Matchmaker ball demo. Anyone wanting a predictable medium to oily lane ball that is forgiving should look at the Equinox Hybrid. It utilizes the new Conduit-AI Core which is a very high RG, high differential and high intermediate differential which is a combination that is not common within bowling balls. It is paired with the RB-92 Solid coverstock to give it a bunch of added traction. \nWhen watching the initial ball videos of this ball, I was a little skeptical with my higher ball speed that I would have a lot of trouble getting this ball to slow down in the right part of the lane. I put the surface to 2000 abralon prior to drilling to allow it to slow down a little faster than was intended.\nI was really surprised on how good the ball reaction was on this Portal. Considering how high the RG value is, it really didn't have problems slowing down. It got through the front part of the lane with ease and read the midlane relatively strong for what it is. I did find however, the shots that were fast off my hand did have some trouble seeing the lane right. I did have to make sure that I did roll the ball more forward for the correct ball reaction. This also makes sense to me because this ball wasn't necessarily designed for fresh conditions. More as a first or second transition ball is where I put this one, especially with the polished box surface. I would still use balls such as the Viking Conquest or Vengeance and then transition to this ball as you need more angle. At the 2000 abralon finish, I was able to bring the Portal reaction closer to the balls I mentioned while still allowing it to be significantly cleaner. If you are a bowler with low ball speed or are in a high friction lane environment, this will be a really good to have. Speed dominant bowlers and high oil volume conditions would likely struggle more with this and it would put it towards the bottom of the bag which would give better opportunity for weaker and cheaper options.\n \nAdam Chase\nStorm Staff","id":"4LwWoe8ldhAbwPEwKvtg","isProductExists":true,"status":"disapproved","statusBeforeTrash":"disapproved","product":{}}];
